The MRS Process is currently in commercial use treating chlor- alkali wastes and sludges. These materials initially contain 20-50% by weight of mercury and are being treated to meet a total residual mercury specification of < 50 ppm.

The work is being performed using an MRS Mobile Unit having a nominal throughput capacity of 4 tons per day. This unit has been built to European Community Standards and is CE Marked.

In pilot studies performed for a number of chlor-alkali producers, the MRS Process has been proven effective in removing and recovering mercury from a wide variety of plant wastes containing high concentrations of chloride and sulfur while retaining the sulfur and chlorine in the treated material and eliminating gaseous sulfur and chlorine compounds from the process exhaust. These materials include:

  • Wastewater Sludge
    • The mercury content was reduced from 19,000 ppm to less than 1 ppm.
  • K 106 Waste
    • The mercury content was reduced from 1.4% by weight to less than 1 ppm.
  • D 009 Sludge
    • The mercury content was reduced from 44.5% to below the 25 ppm specification.
